The Philadelphia born musician has gained popularity in the last few years. Not only has Lay Bankz lent her vocals to one of the hottest songs to ever take over the city, she’s also been creating music that expands her fan base and reach. So far, that she’s now collaborated with artists such as Ciara, NLE Choppa, Maiya The Don and KYLE just to name a few. To our surprise Bankz has been showing us how multifaceted she is. Since her standout collaboration with 5star – Cmonnn went viral, Lay Bankz has continuously elevated her artistry.
She first amassed followers by sharing her energetic and contagious dance moves. Then she invited us into a more personal space of music. Although the dancing is what made her popular, Bankz has always had dreams of being a musician. In an interview with Metro Philadelphia, she shared what it was like growing up in such a tough city and experiencing being slighted amid trying to find her way. “I’ve been making music for four years but I didn’t get official recognition until two years ago,” she explained. “People knew me but gave me the cold shoulder. Nobody in Philly takes you seriously unless you make them.”
And boy did she make them! The TikTok sensation has over 6.5M followers/subscribers/listeners across all of her social media platforms. Lay has broken the barrier between party music (as we like to call it in Philadelphia) and mainstream music. She seamlessly blends R&B with our homegrown sound. Releasing certified hits like Left Cheek (Doo Doo Blick), Na Na Na, and Ick (Lady Boner Gone), she continuously pushes the envelope. I think my current favorite is Girls Just Wanna.
I was a +1 at her listening party for her debut EP Now You See Me and honestly that was the perfect title for the body of work. The faces in the building were those of powerful people. The crowd she draws is amazing. Bankz is a beacon of charisma to fans and industry professionals alike. Just sitting in the room you were able to feel everyone’s authentic excitement. She is truly one of one with undeniable star quality. Now You See Me is in part a coming of age story. The songstress shares personal accounts of dating and growing pains in an unorthodox way.
While typically we as consumers and critics like to label or define artists, I can attest that Lay Bankz’ art knows no bounds or constraints. She has passionately worked on her craft and continues to develop as an artist and we should all give this rising phenom her Flowers.
